Who is behind Studio Luna?
Studio Luna is the brain child of Bianca Velder, seed beader, lampworker, wire artist, teacher and creator of wearable art pieces. Several years ago, I tried to get my creative groove back. As a child, I was always busy creating, with paint, paper mache, clay and materials. As with a lot of latent artists (sounds nicer than wannabe doesn't it) I found myself lost in career, making a living, busy being busy. And so I dabbled; in painting, in stencilling, wood, and glass for a while. Until the moment came, that Aha Erlebnis - I picked up a beading magazine. The oldest story in the world, it was that defining moment where I knew This is it, this is everything. Destiny knocked on the door, and I answered.
Living on a cliff top in South Australia, I am never short of inspiration for unique, exquisite handmade jewellery pieces. I love complexity and big, ostentatious pieces created from the smallest of beads - little seed beads. To me it is almost like jewellery engineering. Due to the time involved, I only tend to make 4 or 5 a year. A selection of these pieces are on this website.
Over the years, I have expanded my skills and experience with other jewellery techniques - lampworking (creating glass beads with a torch), creating with sterling wire, and stringing and more recently, ceramics. And I always return to seed beading, the meditative quality of creating something so beautiful with such small building blocks never ceases to amaze me.
I always say Beads are a social glue, and I would say it is the glue that is holding me together.
